A block of mass 5 kg is placed on an inclined plane at an angle of $12^\circ$. The coefficient of friction is 0.3.

Weight acting on the block, N
Normal reaction of the inclined plane $N$, N
Force that must be applied down the plane to initiate motion of the block, N
Force that must be applied up the plane to initiate motion of the block, N

About this task

This task focuses on the equilibrium of a body on an inclined plane with dry friction. Students determine the weight of the body, the normal reaction, the friction force, and calculate the external force required to initiate motion both up and down the inclined plane. The task develops practical skills in drawing free-body diagrams, resolving forces into components, applying Coulomb's laws of friction, and analyzing equilibrium conditions in engineering mechanics.
