For the given bar (material: steel, Young's modulus 200000 MPa, Poisson's ratio 0.3, yield strength 240 MPa), determine:
Support reaction, kN
Maximum absolute stress, MPa
Actual factor of safety
Elongation of the bar, mm

About this task

This task examines the behaviour of a stepped steel bar subjected to axial tensile and compressive forces. Students calculate the support reaction from equilibrium, determine the normal stress in each bar segment, identify the maximum absolute stress, evaluate the factor of safety against yielding, and calculate the total elongation using Hooke's law. The exercise develops practical skills in axial force analysis, stress evaluation, elastic deformation, and strength verification of stepped members. It is suitable for introductory strength of materials and mechanics of materials courses.
