About this task

This task covers the strength analysis of a column with a built-up cross-section subjected to eccentric compression. Students calculate the cross-sectional area and moments of inertia about the principal axes, determine the position of the neutral axis, and evaluate the maximum compressive and tensile stresses produced by the applied load. The final step is to find the allowable force by checking both compressive and tensile strength conditions. The exercise develops skills in section-property calculation, use of the parallel-axis theorem, eccentric loading analysis, and strength verification of structural members. It is suitable for strength of materials and mechanics courses.
