Relative motion of a particle is considered when a particle moves with respect to a reference frame that itself moves relative to another frame. The motion is separated into relative, transport, and absolute components.
Addition of velocities
The absolute velocity equals the vector sum of relative and transport velocities. This relation is fundamental in the analysis of particles moving in guides or mechanisms whose supporting frame is itself in motion.
Addition of accelerations
The acceleration relation is more involved. When the moving frame rotates, the absolute acceleration includes the Coriolis acceleration in addition to the relative and transport terms.
Choice of reference frames
A reliable solution begins by defining the fixed and moving frames clearly and assigning every velocity and acceleration term to the correct component of motion.
